Escape the chill in a cozy diner located in upstate New York and meet waitress Katie and customer Paul for a cup of coffee… and their secrets. Over their daily encounters they develop an unlikely yet  deeply meaningful friendship, in this heartwarming exchange at the doorway of what lies after grief, should you choose to open that door or run away.

Content: The play addresses themes of grief and suicide. Minimal fowl language. As sensitivities vary from person to person, if you have specific questions regarding content, please call us at (858) 598-7620.

Meet The Artists

Meghan Kennedy

Playwright

Meghan Kennedy (she/her) is a playwright, screenwriter and television writer.  Her plays include The Counter (Roundabout Theatre Company), Napoli, Brooklyn (Roundabout Theatre Company, Long Wharf Theater, Original Theater in London, Outer Critics Circle Award nomination), Too Much, Too Much, Too Many (Roundabout Theater Company), Light (David Calicchio Emerging American Playwright Prize), Lou, Buffalo Bill or How To Be A Good Man. She has received commissions from Roundabout Theater Company and The Geffen Playhouse. Her work has been deve- loped at The Atlantic Theater Company, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Ars Nova, Page 73, Play Penn and produced around the U.S., U.K., Ireland and Sweden. Kennedy lives in Brooklyn.

Desireé Clarke Miller

Director

Desireé Clarke Miller (she/her) is a director, actor, producer, and the Executive Artistic Director of MOXIE Theatre in San Diego, CA. She received her BFA from AMDA: College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts and is a graduate of the British American Drama Academy. Desireé is also a 2024 Old Globe Theatre Classical Directing Fellow. Select directing credits include Powers New Voices Festival: Community Voices (The Old Globe), Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, Man and Moon, Chronicles of Kalki, and Mother of the Maid (MOXIE Theatre), Monsters Of The American Cinema (Diver- sionary Theatre), Gruesome Playground Injuries (Reading, Coyote Stage-Works – Desert Theatre League Award). Desireé also specializes in devised theatre with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. She is currently directing and co-writing a new play titled This Time as part of a partnership with Voices Of Our City Choir, La Jolla Playhouse, and MOXIE Theatre.

Kate Rose Reynolds

Actor, “Katie”

Kate Rose Reynolds (she/her)  is a multi-hyphenate theatre maker and the Director of Operations for Loud Fridge Theatre Group. Mark Stevens

Actor, “Paul”

Mark Stevens (he/him) is beyond thrilled to be making his MOXIE Theatre debut. Since first stepping on a stage in 5th grade, his theatre career has seen him in many capacities from performing as an actor to directing, choreographing, stage managing, designing sets, lights, sound and costumes in addition to teaching Musical Theatre and Acting for the Camera at San Diego City College. He was the Theater and Media Specialist at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts where he headed the support team for more than 50 stage productions and directed a few along the way. Mark has been an actor and director at many SoCal theatre companies including South Coast Rep, the Welk Resort Theater (Craig Noel Award – Best Musical – She Loves Me), Starlight / San Diego Civic Light Opera, Laguna Playhouse, Fullerton Civic Light Opera, Long Beach Playhouse, Long Beach Civic Light Opera (Best Actor – Dr. Carrasco – Man of La Mancha) and the Los Angeles Opera Company. As director or stage manager he has worked at San Diego REP, Coronado Playhouse, J* Company, The Phoenix Theatre in Arizona (Best Director – SUDS – The Rockin’ 60s Musical Soap Opera) and The Des Moines Civic Theatre in Iowa. Thanks to all the MOXIE staff and a very special thank you to our Director, Desireé Clarke Miller, for giving me this opportunity.

Kara Tuckfield

Actor, “Peg”

Kara Tuckfield (she/her) is overjoyed to be making her MOXIE Theatre debut in such a wonderful show with such a talented cast and crew. A native San Diegan, she has performed in Utah, Hawaii and SoCal. Some of her favorite roles are Suzanne in All Bark, No Bite (Coronado Playhouse), Caesar in  Julius Caesar (Vanguard), Paulina in The Winter’s Tale (Coronado Playhouse), Nancy in Oliver! (McKay Theater). In addition to acting, Kara is also a director. Recently she directed Wait Until Dark (Lamplighters), First Date (Point Loma Playhouse), Godspell (Vanguard). Thanks to family and friends for all the things!
