Lolita finds herself in the Wall Street office of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Board. Like a Boricua Lolita before her, she is here in the name of La Revolución! She’s got glamour, glitter, and a gun, but is she really ready? In this fantasmagoria where drag and surrealism collide, we are faced with the question of who decides what’s best for Puerto Rico and for our own bodies.

Mara Vélez Meléndez (Playwright) she/her is a playwright born and raised in Puerto Rico. Her Off-Broadway debut took place in 2022 with Notes on Killing Seven Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Board Members, produced by Soho Rep and The Sol Project. Mara was a 2023 MacDowell Fellow, a 2020-2021 Playwrights Realm Writing Fellow and a member of Ars Nova’s PlayGroup. She is currently adapting the Spotify/Gimlet podcast, Case 63. Other plays include Thelma and Louise and the Time Machine (2022 Breaking The Binary Theater Festival), Baby, I Fell In Love With The Computer (2023 Ars Nova Out Loud) and This Is Not The Oxcart (Clubbed Thumb Biennial Commission Finalist). Andréa Agosto (Director) they/she is an Afro Puerto Rican theatre artist, educator, director, playwright, and voice over actor. An award winning filmmaker (Kansas City Film Fest) and actor (International Model & Talent Association), Andréa loves telling stories. They have written Codewswitchin’ is Conscious (Powers New Voices Festival) and QuickChange (Black Lady Showcase 2022). Recently, they were a participant for 2024 Classical Directing Fellowship and The Old Globe. They’ve Associate Directed Comedy of Errors (The Old Globe), Assistant Directed Henry V (The Old Globe), Co-Directed Straight (Loud Fridge), and directed the following: Buckets (Diversionary) Game of Tiaras, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse (Falcon Players), and more.

Cast & Creative Team

Christine Carmela (Lolita) she/her is thrilled to be making her MOXIE Theatre debut by returning to the role of Lolita in Notes on Killing Seven Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Board Members, a role she originated in the World Premiere of the play at Soho Repertory Theatre in New York. She acquired her BFA in Acting from TCU in Fort Worth, TX and her MFA in Writing for Screen from USC in Los Angeles, where she is now based. Along with Soho Rep, her stage credits include performances at Uptown Players, Circle Theatre, Amphibian Stage, and more. She’d like to dedicate her performance to her father and her abuela, for making her the proud Boricua she is today (and for not making fun of her accent [too much]). William BJ Robinson (Receptionist) he/they is an adopted Black, Puerto Rican, and White queer arts educator, music director, composer, and international artist. Born and raised in New Jersey, BJ moved to San Diego in 2009. Since then, they have musically worked with Southwestern College, All Saints Episcopal Church, the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, J Company Youth Theatre, North Park Vaudeville & Candy Shoppe, Coronado Playhouse, San Diego Junior Theatre, The Old Globe, and many others. Currently, BJ is Director of Music at Christ United Presbyterian Church in South Park, Board President and Director of Community Outreach for Loud Fridge Theatre Group, Creator & Host of Tough Talk, and Host of KPBS/Arts on KPBS. Special thanks to their partner, Sean, for loving a queerdo artist unconditionally; and to MOXIE for seeing a whole person and welcoming them into such a powerful, precious space.
