Development Manager

Status: Full-time (30-40 hrs/wk), non-exempt hourly, hybrid
Compensation:
$30-35/hour, commensurate with experience

Reports To: Executive Artistic Director

The Development Manager plays a central role in advancing MOXIE Theatre’s fundraising efforts by ensuring smooth operations, consistent donor communications, and successful fundraising events. This role works closely with the Executive Artistic Director and the external grant writing team to keep development systems strong, steward mid-level donors, and support donor-facing activities. This position provides the essential infrastructure and coordination that allow MOXIE’s fundraising strategy to thrive.

This position offers the chance to grow as a nonprofit development professional within a supportive, mission-driven team. The Development Manager will gain hands-on experience across donor relations, campaigns, and events while supporting MOXIE’s groundbreaking work to amplify women+’s voices in theatre.

Key Responsibilities

Individual Giving & Donor Engagement:

  • Manage day-to-day donor communications, including thank-you letters, renewal reminders, and impact updates.
  • Coordinate donor recognition lists, benefits, and invitations.
  • Support annual fund and digital campaigns by preparing mailings, online appeals, and tracking results.
  • Assist with donor cultivation events and experiences that deepen engagement, especially for mid-level donors.

 

Grant Support (in collaboration with external partners):

  • Gather program data, impact stories, budgets, and staff input to support external grant writers.
  • Coordinate scheduling and logistics for institutional funder meetings with the EAD.
  • Maintain accurate grant-related records in MOXIE’s CRM.

 

Fundraising Events:

  • Serve as project manager for fundraising events (gala, cultivation salons, benefit performances).
  • Oversee logistics, vendor coordination, guest lists, sponsorship tracking, and volunteer management.
  • Ensure donor and sponsor recognition and follow-up.

 

Systems & Operations:

  • Maintain donor records in CRM/database with accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Generate fundraising reports for EAD, board, and finance staff.
  • Track contributed revenue progress and support financial reconciliation of gifts.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to development processes and systems.

 

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Communications, Arts Administration, Theatre Arts or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2–4 years of professional experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, or related role (preferred)
  • Knowledge of the performing arts industry and appreciation for live theatre

 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with donor databases/CRMs and fundraising platforms.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Marketing & Sales Manager

The Marketing and Sales Manager develops and executes comprehensive marketing strategies to drive ticket sales, increase audience engagement, and build brand awareness for all MOXIE Theatre productions and events. This is the sole marketing position within the organization, requiring an independent, self-motivated professional who can manage all aspects of marketing and sales. This role combines creative marketing with data-driven sales approaches to maximize revenue and expand the theatre’s reach within the community while supporting our mission of amplifying women+’s voices in theatre.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about both marketing strategy and live performance who wants to make a meaningful impact on gender equity in the arts with the flexibility of hybrid work. You’ll have the opportunity to promote groundbreaking theatrical work while building audiences for the classics of tomorrow. Key Responsibilities

Marketing & Promotion

  • Independently develop and implement integrated marketing campaigns for each production, including digital marketing, print advertising, social media, and community outreach
  • Manage the theatre’s website, social media platforms, email marketing campaigns, and online presence as the sole marketing team member
  • Build and maintain relationships with local media outlets and manage press releases, media kits, and review coordination
  • Work closely with Director of Operations and Audience Engagement to coordinate special events, opening night celebrations, and donor appreciation events

 

Sales & Revenue Generation:

  • Work with Executive Artistic Director to develop sales strategy 
  • Oversee all box office operations and train volunteers/staff on sales techniques and customer service excellence
  • Develop and manage group sales programs for schools, corporate clients, and community organizations
  • Create and implement dynamic pricing strategies to optimize revenue across different productions
  • Analyze sales data and audience demographics to identify trends and opportunities for growth
  • Manage subscription and ticket programs, including renewal campaigns and new subscriber acquisition

 

Budget & Analytics:

  • Independently manage marketing and advertising budgets, tracking ROI on all marketing investments
  • Prepare regular reports on sales performance, marketing effectiveness, and audience metrics for Executive Artistic Director
  • Conduct post-production analysis to evaluate campaign success and inform future strategies
  • Generate box office reports to send to licensing companies
  • Monitor competitor activities and industry trends to stay current with best practices
  • Analyze patron engagement data

 

Audience Development:

  • Research and identify target audiences for different productions and develop tailored marketing approaches
  • Create and maintain customer databases and implement CRM strategies to improve patron retention
  • Develop partnerships with local businesses, schools, and community organizations to expand audience reach

 

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • 2-3 years of experience in marketing and sales, preferably in arts, entertainment, or nonprofit sectors (preferred)

Teaching Artists

MOXIE is expanding our educational offering to more schools and communities, and are seeking passionate, experienced Teaching Artists to join our roster. The ideal candidate will develop and implement theatre education programming for students of diverse ages and backgrounds, while upholding MOXIE’s values of humanist approaches to art making and storytelling.

Status: Part-time, non-exempt, employed on a project basis
Reports to: Executive Artistic Director

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitate engaging theatre workshops, classes, and residency programs for students ranging from elementary school to adults.
  • Follow established curriculum when implementing existing programs, while designing your own lesson plans.
  • Develop lessons and curriculums that aligns with MOXIE’s mission and core values
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles and abilities
  • Participate in program evaluation and documentation
  • Collaborate with schools, community centers, and partner organizations to expand our educational outreach
  • Attend occasional meetings and professional development opportunities

 

The Ideal Candidate 

  • Minimum 2 years experience teaching theatre arts in educational, community or theatre settings
  • Strong understanding of theatre fundamentals, including acting, directing, playwriting, and/or technical theatre
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in educational practices
  • Excellent communication and classroom management skills
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Reliable transportation required

 

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with devised theatre and/or new play development
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed and healing-centered teaching practices
  • Bilingual – particularly in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Farsi
  • Experience creating curriculum that addresses social justice issues
  • Knowledge of the San Diego educational landscape
