Production Information:

A Raisin In The Sun tells the story of a family living and struggling on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. It's an incredibly moving play about the power of dreaming in the face of adversity.

The playwright, Lorraine Hansberry, was just 29 years old when A Raisin In The Sun premiered on Broadway in 1959. She became the youngest American playwright and the fifth woman to receive the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play and the first African American to ever be produced on Broadway.Hansberry died just 5 years later, at the age of 34, but her play “changed American theatre forever”

MOXIE is proud to welcome back Mark Christopher Lawrence in the role of Walter Lee, one of the greatest characters in American Literature. You may recognize Mark from his hit tv series on NBC's CHUCK, or from recent San Diego productions including The Piano Lesson and Fences at Cygnet Theatre and Gibson Girl at MOXIE.

We're also thrilled that the production will be helmed by MOXIE's own Artistic Director, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, winner of The Des McAnuff New Visions Award, several "Craig Noel" and "Patte" awards and the Women's Internation Center Living Legacy Award. Delicia was also twice the receipient of the Van Lier Directing Fellowship through Second Stage Theatre in New York and an alumnae of the New York Drama League's Directors Program.
